New roads and traffic authority laws introduced into NSW in July means it is illegal to drive a vehicle with an animal on board whereby the animal may prevent the driver from having proper control of the vehicle. Essentially this means that it is important to have your animal properly restrained within a car and this is common sense when taking into account the safety and well-being of your pet.
As we all know any unrestrained item travelling along at speed runs the risk of becoming a projectile missile and in the past we have unfortunately seen incidences where animals have been killed or badly injured as they have hit the dashboard or the windscreen in a car accident. Ku-Ring-Gai Veterinary Hospital is now implementing a policy whereby we strongly advise all our pet owners to enforce appropriate safety restraint measures for pets.
This may be as simple as the installation of a cargo barrier for station wagons, hatch backs and four wheel drives through to easily applied restraint harnesses which, when not being used in the car, can also be used for walking or restraining in other areas. Ku-Ring-Gai Vet Hospital has a range of restraint safety harnesses available and will fit these to your pets at no charge. For further enquiries please do not hesitate to call or pop in to discuss your pet’s safety needs.
